Why Kalrez Parts Are the Right Fit for Oil and Gas Applications

How do you know you’re purchasing the right seals for your oil and gas company? If you’re working in the oil and gas industry, you know your sealants need to withstand extreme temperatures, chemicals and wear. When you find the right product, it can be difficult to determine if the seals you’re researching are genuine.

What’s the solution? Genuine Kalrez parts from C&B Equipment.

About Kalrez Seals

Did you know that Kalrez perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) parts can withstand attack from more than 1,800 chemical, solvents and plasmas? According to the Dupont website, Kalrez products are engineered to reduce extreme volume swell and provide the best sealing solutions for harsh chemical environments and high temperatures. Kalrez has over 30 years of experience formulating and developing seals for the oil and gas industry.

The Kalrez seal product line features five products:

  • Kalrez 0090 Delivers durable, reliable sealing in applications that require RGD properties combined with high hardness and high modulus.
  • Kalrez 6375 Outstanding performance and longer life over a broad temperature range, in the widest possible range of chemicals.
  • Kalrez 7090 For use in applications requiring high hardness or higher modulus properties.
  • Kalrez 0040 For low temperature environments where elasticity and significant chemical resistance are required.
  • Kalrez 3065 Mechanical properties and good all-round chemical resistance make this the best choice for many oil and gas well applications. Normally used for V-rings and other custom parts rather than O-rings.

Applications for Kalrez Sealants

Kalrez seals can be used for several applications in the oil and gas industry. Most often, these seals are employed for use in drilling, completion, and production applications, among others.

Due to their Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD), extrusion, high pressure, and high and low temperature resistance, Kalrez sealants are the preferred product for use in drilling applications. Typically, Kalrez seals are used for drilling tools, intervention tools, measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD). As one of the most reliable seals on the market, the Kalrez 0090 is the choice seal for drilling applications. However, the Kalrez Spectrum 7090 can be used in limited short-term drilling applications, and the Kalrez Spectrum 6375 can be used in MWD and LWD applications if by chance no RGD resistance is required.

For completion applications, such as packing elements, packers, and formation evaluation, Kalrez seals are preferred for their optimal extrusion, high pressure, and high and low temperature resistance. In most applications, the Kalrez 0090 is the preferred seal. In applications that require V-ring or chevron seals, the Kalrez 3065 seal is still a good choice.

Production applications have a wide variety of Kalrez seal uses, including electric submersible pumps, enhanced oil recovery (water, steam, carbon dioxide or sour gas), Christmas tree, pipeline valves, ball valves, subsea equipment, risers, and monitoring/logging. In production applications, Kalrez seals offer benefits including extrusion, high and low temperature, RGD and high-pressure resistance.

Additionally, the Kalrez Spectrum 6375 has been employed in electrical connector applications due to its low electrical conductivity, high and low temperature resistance, and high-pressure resistance.

Specifications

Kalrez seals can accommodate maximum temperatures of up to 617 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, Kalrez seals are available in O-ring, V-ring, boot, T-seal, packer, and seal with embedded anti-extrusion device types. The Kalrez 0090 has received specialized certifications, including NORSOK M-710 (Rev. 2), ISO 23939-2 and Total GS EP PVV 142 (Rev. 5).
