Types of Industrial Diesel Engines: YANMAR Air Cooled and Water Cooled Engines

Yanmar is known for its high-quality diesel engines, engine parts and other diesel products. Popular within a wide range of industries – from agriculture to industrial organizations. Established in 1933, YANMAR has manufactured over 15 million diesel engines ranging from 4.5 to 5,000 horsepower. YANMAR engines are known for their:

  • Low Fuel Consumption
  • High Power Reliability
  • Compliance with Emissions Regulations
  • Versatile Across Industries
  • High Power-to-Weight Ratio

Applications for YANMAR Industrial Diesel Engines

Agriculture: Mowing, excavation and harvesting equipment.

Construction: Powers heavy equipment and machinery.

Marine: Navigational buoys, lighthouse operation and telecommunications equipment.

Air-cooled industrial diesel engines are also utilized by the military and emergency responders. This is because of their ability to power up quickly and operate in extremely challenging conditions with high temperatures or situations where large amounts of debris are present without the need for specific coolant parts or intensive maintenance.

There are two categories of diesel engines produced by YANMAR that are used for industrial applications – air-cooled or liquid-cooled.

Let’s dive in and take a closer look at YANMAR air-cooled and water-cooled engines.

Air Cooled Industrial Diesel Engines

This system of cooling uses air circulation to bring the temperature down. In air-cooling systems, the engine takes cool air from the atmosphere and uses that air to keep the equipment from overheating. Air-cooled diesel engines are compact and require limited resources to operate and are sometimes chosen over liquid-cooled engines for their efficiency, flexibility, dependability, and ease of use for certain applications – particularly if the equipment being powered is used outdoors.

C&B Equipment is a proud retailer of Yanmar air-cooled diesel engines. Yanmar produces a variety of innovative L-series air-cooled diesel engines with customizations for almost any application. The L-series engine outputs range from 4.2 horsepower at 3,600 RPM to 10 horsepower at 3,600 RPM.

Water Cooled Industrial Diesel Engines

In a water-cooled system, the generator uses oil or coolant to keep the temperature of the internal parts down. Water cooling uses a radiator and water pump. The pump distributes liquid to the engine block using a series of hoses.

Water-cooled engines such as the YANMAR Final Tier 4 TNV offer an impressive list of features, including ECU-controlled common-rail direct-injection system to reduce emissions, precise fuel delivery and control that improve overall performance for a wide variety of applications. These systems also have the ability to dampen noise that could cause issues while equipment was in use while still producing outputs ranging from 14.3 horsepower at 1800 RPM to 115 horsepower at 2500 RPM. The YANMAR Final Tier 4 TNV is available in 2-cylinder, 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder water-cooled versions with a 4-cycle inline configuration.

In addition to the YANMAR Final Tier 4 TNV engine line, the engineers at YANMAR have also created an engine that provides industry-leading power in a more economic size. The 3-cylinder, 4-cycle YANMAR TNM (MINIMAX) line of engines with outputs ranging from 11.8 horsepower at 1800 RPM to 22.8 horsepower at 3600 RPM. This engine line boasts the industry-respected durability and reliability offered by the TNV water-cooled engine line in a more compact package.

The TNM engine is built upon the same design principles as the TNV engine, offering fantastic fuel efficiency and control by increasing the engine’s displacement and compression ratio with low noise levels.
